Valentina, a 12-week-old Chocolate Lab, was surrendered to a private veterinary practice in Arizona, the MSCPA-Angell reports. The puppy was unable to keep food down and was later diagnosed with vascular ring anomaly.
The rare disorder results in the entrapment and constriction of the esophagus and requires corrective surgery so that dogs can eat, the agency said.
Given the practice's lack of funding, the only option for Valentina was to be put down until a member of the MSCPA asked to have the puppy transported to Boston for surgery.
“As one of just a few organizations in the country that’s capable of handling diagnosis, surgery, post-op recovery, and adoption, we’re in a really unique position when it comes to helping animals like Valentina,” explained Mike Keiley, MSPCA-Angell director of adoption centers and programs.
“We immediately knew we were going to do everything we could to get her here and get her the help she needed," he continued.
Dr. Meghan Barnes, who diagnosed Valentina and made contact with the practice in Arizona, flew out to get the Lab on Thursday, Feb. 9. She later had her surgery on Friday, Feb. 17 through which she sailed "with flying colors," the MSPCA said.
“It was quite a journey for such a young puppy, but Valentina is unstoppable,” Keiley added. “We expect her to live a full, happy, and healthy life following surgery, which would not have been possible if she hadn’t been brought to Angell.”
Valentina will be monitored closely in foster care to protect against illness as she recovers for several weeks, the MSCPA said. Dozens of people have already reached out expressing their interest in adopting Valentina, which is her next step.
